Posted this elsewhere, for completely different reasons:
David Lynch’s 1980 tour de force, ENOCHIAN GRAFFITI II: THE UNDER-EMPIRE STRIKES BACK broke all box office records and received multiple Academy Awards. Its success ushered in a wave of urban fantasy movies. In 1982 alone, multiple Italian-made, Philippines-shot, Kurosawa-inspired “surf operas” came out. Critics panned them, but audience response prompted Roger Corman’s first and only real estate venture – a 1:1 recreation of the most recognizable parts of the Corregidor ruins at Bolsa Chica Beach, 30 minutes southwest of Disneyland. The project, completed in 1987, made its money back, but by 1990 was no longer profitable as a standalone tourist attraction. Corman rebranded it as a festival venue, and while it has had rough years it has been profitable in that role every decade, and the Corman estate owns a percentage to this day.
